Before You Get A Dog, Read This!

If you're thinking about getting a dog, specifically a French Bulldog, there's a few things you should know! I'm sharing a few of the mistakes that I made to hopefully help you avoid those.

*Disclaimer: I love Hudson with my whole heart and I wouldn’t trade him for the world. I know I was picked to be his mom for a reason and I am so lucky. I have learned a lot since bringing Hudson home and will definitely do things differently before bringing home my next Frenchie.

Here are a few things to take into consideration before you get a dog:

Research Your Breeder

Before you get a dog, make sure you research the breeder. There are a lot of questions I would ask but here are a few:

  • Meet the breeder

  • Ask to see if there is a history of any spinal problems with the puppy or the puppy's family

  • Ask questions

  • See the pup's parents

  • Get a full medical history

  • Health Clearance Certificate ( This will confirm the parents are healthy by running multiple different tests )

  • Breeding Frequency

  • Age of the parents & medical check

  • Ask to speak to previous clients

Get Pet Insurance

I highly recommend getting pet insurance! I got pet insurance after Hudson’s spinal surgery & didn't realize the importance of pet insurance before this. We have used it multiple times since then and it has helped us a lot.

A few things to look for when picking pet insurance:

• Age restrictions

• Breed exclusions

• Compare basic plan options - Monthly premiums, deductibles, claim reimbursement amounts, and limits

• The maximum cover for vet fees

• Look into what is covered: Holistic therapies ( acupuncture, etc. ), rehabilitation, diagnostic testing, cancer treatments, emergency vet, surgery, hereditary conditions, and more!

There is so much more involved in selecting a breeder & choosing the right pet insurance plan, but I hope this helped in your initial search to bring home a dog! & if you want a laugh, here's a video I posted on my Instagram about owning a Frenchie:
